More than just music!

Eugene Lee

Technologist & pianist

Having passions is such an important thing in our lives. Passions allow us to experience true joy and also give us the strength to get through difficulties when facing hurdles. Our guest, Eugene Lee has a passion for various things. One of them is music. He started learning piano when he was 4ish. He didn’t really enjoy learning it when he was little. It was tough to practice the piano for hours and hours, but his mom made him continue, so he was upset at his mom at times. But now? He is so thankful. He developed a love of music through playing the piano. Music has ties with a lot of different subjects. He learned to appreciate art, history, and other subjects through music. Eugene studied Physics at Harvard and ended up working in big tech companies as an executive. Now he is running his own company in health tech and plays the piano as a member of the Peninsula Symphony.

At our Special Camp, Eugene played a few pieces of classical music composed by Mozart, Debussy, and Arvo Part. The kids especially loved the variations of “Twinkle Star” composed by Mozart. One of the kids raised a hand and said, “Eugene, I play the piano, too, and I want to practice a lot and become like you”.

Eugene spoke about how images come to his mind when he listens to music. When he first heard “Fur Alina” composed by Arvo Part, Eugene immediately remembered the photos of empty cities during the COVID lockdown. Eugene explained how music is related to math, physics, art, literature, dance, history, and foreign languages.

It was obvious that our kids love music although they might not be aware of who made the piece of music they are listening to. They can still enjoy it and are so imaginative with it. They loved and appreciated the music time with Eugene.
